Sydney Smith on the collaborative creation between writer, illustrator and editor
Sydney Smith and Joanne Schwartz just took home the $50,000 TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award for their book, Town Is by the Sea. In our first ever audio Q&A, Smith gives Chris Benjamin the lowdown on the importance of getting the little details right, and how a South Shore boy brought Cape Breton to life from Toronto. Smith also reflects with awe on the magnificent work of his editor, Sheila Barry, who sadly died last year:
Chris Benjamin is the managing editor of Atlantic Books Today. He is also the author of Boy With A Problem; Indian School Road; Eco-Innovators and Drive-by Saviours; as well as several short stories in anthologies and journals.
