Drop the Mic: Intro to Spoken Word

November 24 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm AST

On Tuesdays in November, the PEIWG is trying something new: WE’RE GOING DIGITAL!! Our online workshop series, “Drop the Mic: An Intro to Spoken Word,” will explore the rich genre of spoken word and storytelling art form, in hopes of giving participants a confidence boost and performance experience along the way—all in a comfortable, online space.

Led by award-winning interdisciplinary researcher, ethicist and spoken-word artist Dr. Julie Bull, this four-week workshop series will give participants the chance to explore and practice skills of the art of spoken word.

Bull will present on the following topics:

* How does poetry become spoken-word art?
* Elements of poetry
* Sound patterns
* Collective poetry writing.

Participants will also be given writing prompts and have the opportunity to write their own poems, either independently or in a shared working environment.

The final session will be a virtual poetry slam where participants will have the opportunity to perform their pieces.

The workshop series will run Tuesdays in November, from 7-8 pm, and includes Tuesdays Nov. 3rd, Nov. 10th, Nov. 17th, and Nov. 24th. The cost for all 4 sessions is $40/ PEIWG Members and $50/ Nonmembers.

Session pricing includes all four workshops (no single workshop pricing is available this time). Two bursaries will be reserved for members of diverse and Indigenous communities: please email peiwritersguild@gmail.com for more info.
