Moncton’s Frye Festival is looking for enthusiastic readers and aspiring writers

The 2015 Frye Festival will take place April 25 to May 3, but literary activities begin as early as October

Frye Festival 2015The festival is currently recruiting young writers and young readers who wish to participate in the largest literary event in Atlantic Canada. An invitation is extended to all high school students from New Brunswick to register for fall program activities: Frye Academy and the Provincial Writing Contest.

The Frye Festival is Atlantic Canada’s largest literary happening and the only bilingual literary festival in Canada. Every year, it offers the public of Greater Moncton the opportunity to meet and hear great authors from Canada and abroad. Over the course of the past 16 years, the festival has welcomed more than 475 authors and has reached 145,000 festival-goers, including 100,000 students across New Brunswick.

A major component of the annual programming of the Festival, the School-Youth Program reaches nearly 10,000 students across New Brunswick annually, giving them the opportunity to participate in a literary happening or shine in a professional context.

In addition to feeding imagination and cultivating the student interest in reading, many activities help young people develop essential skills for success, including critical thinking and public speaking.

2014 Frye Academy

Frye Academy brings together bilingual high school students from New Brunswick who read and debate four books by contemporary Canadian authors. Three ‘battles of the books’ take place during the year (December 2014, March 2015 and April 2015) and the winning author is invited to Moncton to meet the jurors and the public. The selected titles for the 6th edition of Frye Academy are:

·        Aime-moi, by Véronique Marcotte
·        Cures for Hunger, by Deni Y. Béchard
·        L’Orangeraie, by Larry Tremblay
·        Bone & Bread, by Saleema Nawaz

This activity promotes linguistic duality through reading and all the books are free for participating jurors. Students who wish to participate must register at Teachers can forward names of students interested in this activity to The deadline to register is Friday, October 10, 2014.

Provincial Writing Contest

The Provincial Writing Contest is the perfect opportunity for emerging authors to showcase their literary talents. Students in grades 9 to12 are invited to submit an essay, a short story or drama and the participants will have a chance to win cash prizes offered in each category and for each language. Winners are invited to the Soirée Frye where they can mingle with the biggest names in Canadian literature and their works will be published in the Times & Transcript. Please note that the winner of the drama category will get a staged reading of his play, presented in collaboration with the théâtre l’Escaouette.
