Do you have a great book idea? Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association’s Pitch the Publisher event is returning to Word on the Street Halifax 2019 on Saturday, September 14th at the Halifax Central Library
Pitch the Publisher offers budding authors 5 minutes with a panel of Atlantic Canadian publishers. They’ll get a chance to pitch their book idea and hear feedback from publishers. This event always draws a big crowd at the festival and is fondly referred to as a “literary Dragon’s Den” (but with friendly dragons!).
Did you know Hand Drawn Halifax by Emma FitzGerald was originally pitched at Pitch the Publisher? Here’s what FitzGerald has to say if you are considering submitting: “Pitch the Publisher made my first book, Hand Drawn Halifax, possible. It forced me to focus my ideas, gave me a venue to speak to real live book publishers, and ultimately ended in a book contract, and the beginning of many more books. I highly recommend giving it a go!”
Jane Doucet also has a success story. The novel she pitched at last year’s Pitch the Publisher, a “riotous romp” about a married couple in their late 50s who open an upscale sex shop in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia will be published with Vagrant Press – Nimbus Publishing’s fiction imprint. “Being chosen for Pitch the Publisher gave me confidence that I might actually have a novel worthy of publication. Preparing my pitch helped me hone its message, and presenting it in front of a panel and the general public was excellent practice given that I’m nervous speaking in public. The advice I got from the Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association was to have fun—and I did! Even better, I landed a book contract.”
This year’s Pitch the Publisher event will take place from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm in the Plaza Tent in front of the Halifax Central Library on Saturday, September 14th. Submissions are open until August 30, 2019. There are limited spots, so be sure to submit on time! Those selected will be notified by September 9th.
