With isolation and social distancing measures in place as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, independent bookstores and local shops are finding ways to continue providing Atlantic Canadians with books through online shopping, orders and recommendations by phone and email, and local delivery or contact-free pick up options. If you’re looking for reading material to curl up with while we all stay home, here’s a list of places where you can stock up, shop local, and support independent bookstores, while continuing to practice social distancing. Tidewater Books & Browsery in Sackville is taking online orders from their webstore (including audiobooks) while the store is closed. They offer daily shipping, local delivery, and curbside pickup. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to make arrangements. Check out some of their Atlantic Canadian authors in stock!
Westminster Books in Fredericton is offering free delivery within the city limits and curbside pickup (email for details) while the store is closed. Through community donations, they were able to purchase books to be delivered with Meals on Wheels in Fredericton this week. Read their latest update here.
The Downhome Shoppe in St. John’s has temporarily closed the Avalon Mall and Water St. Locations, but their online store is open. Visit shopdownhome.com/books for lots of great new books from Newfoundland authors and publishers.
Send a message to Bainton’s Tannery Outlet and Mad Hatter Bookstore in Annapolis Royal and they may be able to offer free local delivery. They’re accepting e-transfers or credit card payments over the phone, and they specialize in local interest and local authors.
Bookmark Halifax has you covered: you can always shop online at bookmarkreads.ca (and they have audiobooks!), and there are loads of Atlantic books. Reach reach them at 902.423.0419 or email@example.com, and they can ship books to you, deliver within a few blocks of the store, or arrange curbside pickups.
King’s Co-op Bookstore in Halifax is taking online orders at kingsbookstore.ca and offering free mailbox delivery in the HRM while the storefront is closed. You can email firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions. And don’t forget to check out their list of books by King’s authors and alumni.

Lexicon Books in Lunenburg is scheduling pickup for prepaid orders and they offer delivery in Lunenburg and Mahone Bay once a week while the store is closed. Check out their list of Maritime & Atlantic Connection books. You can make orders by email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or visit lexiconbooks.ca (where they also have audiobooks available!)

Otis and Clementine is a secondhand bookshop in Tantallon, Nova Scotia. You can order remotely and pick up afterhours: they will leave your purchases in a bag outside the shop for pickup after 5 pm! Browse their Facebook posts to see what’s in stock, message them for details, and pay by e-transfer.
Strange Adventures Comics & Curiosities (Halifax and Dartmouth) are doing mail orders and free local deliveries around the HRM. This may take a day or two — send them a message on Facebook for details, and follow their page for comic books recommendations.
Tattletales Books has online shopping available at tattletalesbooks.ca, and a great selection of Atlantic Canadian picture books. You can also pay with a credit card over they phone, and they will bring your order to your car. Check their Facebook page for any updates.
Woozles Bookstore in Halifax does free deliveries within a 30 minute radius! While the store is closed to the public, you can call 902.423.7626 to arrange a delivery or curbside pickup, or for book recommendations (they’ll be available to answer calls and respond to messages Monday – Saturday from 11-4). Prince Edward Island
While Bookmark Charlottetown is closed, you can order online at bookmarkreads.ca, where they have “new books by Island authors you won’t find anywhere else.” They also have audiobooks! You can also call 902-566-4888 / email firstname.lastname@example.org for free same day delivery in the Charlottetown area. If you live outside of Charlottetown, give them a call to find out if they can deliver.
